Tunisia, officially the Republic of Tunisia, is the northernmost country in Africa. It is a part of the Maghreb region of North Africa, and is bordered by Algeria to the west and southwest, Libya to the southeast, and the Mediterranean Sea to the north and east; covering 163,610 km², with a population of 11 million.
The economy of Tunisia is in the process of being liberalized after decades of heavy state direction and participation in the country’s economy. Prudent economic and fiscal planning have resulted in moderate but sustained growth for over a decade.
For instance, article 2 of the Constitution states that “Tunisia is a civil state based on citizenship, the will of the people, and the supremacy of law.” This means that although Islam is the religion of the country, Tunisia is not ruled by Sharia. Tunisia is a secular state.
